The Texas House of Representatives presented a resolution Monday, May 15, 2017, to honor the late David Mattax, former Texas Commissioner of Insurance.

House Resolution 1951, authored by Rep. Larry Phillips, Chairman of the House Insurance Committee, was read not long after the House was called to order. Rep. Phillips recognized Commissioner Mattax’s mother, who was in attendance, and his sister before presenting House Resolution 1951. He was joined by Reps. John Frullo, Sergio Munoz, Jr, and Larry Gonzales.

The resolution detailed Commissioner Mattax’s professional accomplishments, including his time with the Attorney General’s Office and the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). Staff from both organizations were present in the gallery of the House to pay respects to the late Commissioner.

Rep. Frullo noted that he worked with Commissioner Mattax in the past and that there was never a shortage of wit when he was present. Rep. Frullo thanked the members of the House for passing an amendment to Senate Bill 1070, which renamed the bill “The Mattax Act” in memory of the Commissioner.

“He is a great man and he left a great mark on this state,” Rep. Frullo said.

Following the reading of the resolution, the House held a moment of silence to honor Commissioner Mattax. When the House adjourns for the day, it will be in his memory.
