House Insurance Committee Holds First Meeting

The Texas House of Representatives Committee on Insurance held its first meeting of the 86th Legislative Session on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

Rep. Eddie Lucio III, committee chair, stated that the purpose of the meeting was informational. No specific bills were discussed.

Texas Insurance Commissioner Kent Sullivan provided testimony, along with Chief Deputy Commissioner Doug Slape, regarding the Texas Department of Insurance’s (TDI) purpose and initiatives since his appointment. Members of the committee asked questions about the organization’s resources and plans moving forward.

Following this presentation, Melissa Hamilton, Public Counsel for the Office of Public Insurance Counsel (OPIC), and Kara Mace, OPIC Deputy Public Counsel, provided an overview of the organization and answered questions. Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) General Manager John Polak wrapped up the hearing by sharing information about TWIA.
