NFIP Extended Through May 31, 2019

On the day when it would have otherwise expired, the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) was extended by Congress, who passed an act to reauthorize the program through May 31, 2019. The bill was originally introduced and passed by the Senate in November 2018 before passing the House of Representatives and being signed by President Donald Trump on December 21, 2018.

The extension act does not include any reform efforts and instead only extends the program until a later date.

Due to the government shutdown, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) originally announced that NFIP policies in force before midnight on December 21, 2018, remained in force, but that no new or renewal flood insurance contracts would be issued until funding had been secured. In a statement released on December 28, 2018, FEMA stated that it would resume normal operations and would again begin the sale of new and renewal insurance policies immediately.
