Congress Authorizes NFIP Until March 23

Congress has once again reauthorized the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), this time until March 23, 2018. The extension was included as part of a proposal to ensure funding of the federal government, which was signed by President Donald Trump on Friday, February 9, 2018.

The NFIP, designed to provide federally backed flood insurance to those in high-risk areas, was set to expire earlier this year, but Congress authorized an extension until February 8, 2018. The current reauthorization allows the government more time to address issues and ensure funding for a more prolonged period.

If Congress fails to reauthorize the program by midnight on March 23, 2018, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) would have the authority to pay NFIP claims with available funds, but would not allow any new or renewal policies.
