TDI Online Toolkit Aims to Prevent Fraud After Storms

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) has created an online toolkit for city and county officials to protect consumers from fraud following storms or disasters.

The toolkit lists steps that local officials can take, such as issuing a disaster declaration, reviewing local permitting requirements, and educating residents. Local governments have access to sample social media posts created by TDI, as well as posters that can be printed and distributed in the community urging residents to take precautions against scams.

“It’s important to get information to storm victims fast,” said Kent Sullivan, Texas Insurance Commissioner. “People want to start the repair and recovery process as quickly as possible. Good information helps consumers make good decisions.”

As part of the toolkit, officials also have access to helpful phone numbers, such as the TDI fraud unit and consumer help line, Texas Attorney General, and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), among others. More information can be requested by contacting FraudUnit@tdi.texas.gov.
