Sen. Taylor Requests Attorney General Opinion on TWIA

Texas Senator Larry Taylor has filed a request for opinion with the Texas Attorney General’s office regarding the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA) and recently passed legislation related to it.

The letter was dated December 10, 2019, which is the same day that the TWIA Board approved a $90 million assessment for member insurance companies and deferred action on rate modifications for commercial and residential risks. As part of the request, Sen. Taylor states that new laws that have taken effect, HB 1900 and SB 615, combined with actions taken by TWIA renders rate increases improper. He concludes by requesting an immediate and temporary injunction against TWIA from taking any further action on policyholder rates.

Sen. Taylor is Chair of the Senate Committee on Education and represents District 11, which includes parts of Brazoria, Galveston, and Harris counties. Sen. Taylor also owns Truman Taylor Insurance Agency in Friendswood.

The request is currently pending but can be viewed on the Texas Attorney General website.
